Heavy Events

The Glengarry Highland Games include a Men’s and a Women’s Heavy Events competition - see below for the disciplines and our FAQ for weights. We require a minimum of three participants in each category to go ahead with the competition.

The prize pots for each Heavy Event for 2025 are as follows:

  • First Prize: £40

  • Second Prize: £30

  • Third Prize: £20

  • Fourth Prize: £10

Races

We also feature flat races over 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m for Men, Women and Juniors as well as a Hill Race.

We require a minimum of three participants in each race category to go ahead with the competition.

The prize pots for the Adult Races in 2025 are as follows:

  • First Prize: £40

  • Second Prize: £15

  • Third Prize: £10

Junior Prize Pots are at £20, £15 and £10.

  • Caber Toss

    Perhaps the most iconic competition.

    Note: You will need to have experience in this discipline to compete!

  • Hammer

    The record for Hammer has been held by L Coulthart since 2011. He threw the hammer over 132.4”.

  • Weight over the bar

  • Weight for Distance

    J Gunn holds the record for the 28lbs weight for achieving a distance of 77’4”. S Anderson recorded the unbeaten 37’1” for 56lbs.

  • Races

    We have men’s and wome’s races over 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m.

  • Hillrace

    Women, men, boys and girls can all compete in this hill race.

    Records here have last been broken in 2018 by B Johnstone who won the men’s race in 23.06. Incidentally, Ben remains also the Junior record holder with 26.18 in 2015. Ladies record holder is N Meekin since 2008.

  • Kids Races

    Kids have to opportunity to take part in backwards, sack, wheelbarrow, egg and three-legged races as well as the common flat race. For fairness, kids will compete in different age classes.

  • Tug O'War

    Bring a team and compete in this mixed, fun competition for a fun prize for the whole team. Teams must be 9 people so gather your friends, and give it a go!

  • Highland Dancing

    No Highland Games would be complete without the dancers - starting first thing in the morning. Register here or contact Morven McPhillips (morvenmcp@icloud.com or 07748075158) for more in ormation.

Competition FAQ

 

  • For heavy events, you must be at least 18 years of age.

    Our Adult Races are open to anyone over the age of 16. We have Junior Races for anyone aged 9 to 15 years. If you’re younger than 9 years old, you can participate in the fun kids races.

    There is no upper age limit.

  • We are excited to see new competitors participate in our games, but we realise that some of the events are hard to practise for/ present a risk of injury if you have no experience at all. For the heavy events, you must have some experience. If you are unsure if what you know is enough, be sure to come early and get the lay of the land or send us a message.

  • Yes, this is required by the Royal Scottish Highland Games Association. If this presents a barrier for you to enter, please get in contact and we can help facilitate the loan of a competition kilt for you.

  • We will publish the athlete registration form in due course.

    To compete you will need to be a member of the Royal Scottish Highland Games Association (RSHGA). Membership with the Association will allow you to compete at all member events. To register for Membership, visit: https://www.rshga.org/registration/register

    Day Permit:

    Athletes who wish to compete only at ONE Member Games during the Season may apply for a Day Permit. This should be done on the day at that event and may not be done online. The cost is £10 for an Adult, and FREE for a Youth (aged under 16 on date of registration). You can register for a Day Permit via our athlete registration form, and pay for it on Games Day at the Games Hut.

  • We are hoping for a lively competition so there is no upper limit to how many competitors can sign up, or how many competitions you can sign up for. However, we need at least 3 competitors per category to hold the event!

  • The Tug’O’War is a fun event, and the more compete, the better. We allow mixed teams of 9 people to compete against one another, so get your friends together and sign up!

  • We have a trophy for the best local athlete which is determined either on points or by the head judge. We define local as anyone travelling from as much as 25 miles away. Below for a map.
